What is the Paleo diet? The Paleo diet has been called the Caveman Diet or the Stone Age diet. The Paleo diet believes that we should eat like we ate when we were cavemen; before the agriculture period. If you can't hunt and gather it then you should not eat it. S. Boyd Eaton believes that we have inherited all of our characteristics from our caveman ancestors. Our body’s biochemistry and our genetics are the same as they were before agriculture came into play. And this is the reason he thinks we should eat the way we ate over 10,000 years ago if we want to live the healthiest life possible.
Foods you can or can't eat on the Paleo diet Since you can only eat what you could have hunted back in the days before agriculture, you will only be eating things that occur naturally.
You can eat fish, meats (as long as they have been grass-fed and raised in a pasture), vegetables, fruits, nuts, eggs, and even fungi and roots. A good thing about the Paleo diet is that all of the foods you can eat are really delicious and by mixing and matching vegetables with fruits and meats, you can come up with many different and exciting meals.
You cannot eat grains, beans, or dairy products. You should limit regular potatoes (sweet potatoes are fine). You cannot have any refined salt or sugar or any processed oils while following the Paleo diet. So you should say no to canola, corn or other "vegetable" oils. However, olive and coconut oils are very healthy for you. Anything coming from a coconut is also allowed on the Paleo diet.
How does the Paleo diet work? The Paleo diet works to bring your insulin levels back to normal. Loss of control of our body's insulin over a consistent period of time can cause an overproduction of insulin, which is a major cause of several illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, stroke and more! If you are constantly spiking your insulin levels with certain foods, your body can have a hard time controlling these levels as your insulin sensitivity decreases. Your body has trouble shedding fat also if it cannot handle the insulin produced by the foods we eat.
Some foods will obviously produce more insulin than other foods. Most of the foods that cause a spike in your blood sugar and insulin levels are carbohydrates. Some carbohydrates, however, do not spike your blood sugar and insulin too much, such as vegetables. Keep in mind bad carbs that are commonly found in refined sugars such as cakes, pastas, and breads are some of the main causes of these spikes, hence that is why they are no allowed with Paleo. As a general rule of thumb, one should try to stay away from "added" sugar sources.
The Paleo Diet is Definitely Worth Trying Out! By consuming a mix of the right carbohydrates, good proteins along with vegetables and small amounts of good fats, you will gain better control over your body's insulin production and start shedding excess fat...but more importantly, you will FEEL better, look better, and overall be much healthier!
